Problem – WIC were seeing corrosion issues on their components after the annealing process. The components were suffering from both red and black rust in specific places. WIC were at a loss to explain the cause of the corrosion and found themselves spending excessive amounts of time investigating and removing the corrosion.

AMCASH – the AMCASH team at University of Birmingham contacted Ole Jensen to see if he had any projects that he would like them to take a closer look. Ole decided that the corrosion issues would be a perfect fit for further analysis. Using scanning electron microscopy allowed a closer look at the red and black rust and provided a detailed chemical analysis.

The chemical analysis showed that the corrosion was related to heat and specifically the time taken for the components to cool after the annealing process. The AMCASH team presented four potential solutions back to WIC including changing their process to significantly reduce the time taken for the components to cool rather than leaving at room temperature.

Result – WIC altered their process to speed up the cooling process, which resulted in eliminating the corrosion problem. Ultimately, WIC can now focus on more value-add processes that will improve their offering rather than spending the majority of their time fixing problems.
